Is it really a deal?
A shucked drive costs you the enclosure warranty and gives you no manufacturer warranty on the drive, because the drive was never sold to you separately. That is the trade behind the lowest cost per terabyte on this page.
For the cheapest row on this page we have recorded a low of CA$674.58 on 2026-10-27, across 7 days of our own checks.
2026 is a shortage year for both hard-drive platters and NAND, and several list prices were raised earlier in the year before being discounted during this event. A percentage off a raised list price is not the same as a low, which is why every row here is compared against what we recorded for that exact item instead.
What the verdicts mean
- Real low
- At or below the lowest price we have recorded for this item.
- Near its low
- Within three percent of the lowest price we have recorded.
- List-price cut
- Cut against Amazon's own reference price, but still above the lowest price we have recorded.
- Not a deal
- Above our 30-day median for this item.
- No history yet
- We have fewer than seven days of our own price checks for this item.
Opening an external enclosure for the drive inside is the cheapest route to large capacity in 2026, and the reason it works is that the finished product costs less than the bare drive it contains. This page covers the families where that is practical, Seagate Expansion Desktop, WD Elements Desktop, easystore and My Book, with a column for what is usually inside and a column for whether the family opens cleanly. Two caveats apply to every row: the enclosure warranty ends when the case does, and what is inside varies by batch.
Frequently asked questions
Does opening the case void the warranty?
It ends the warranty on the enclosure, which is the product you bought. The bare drive inside carries no separate consumer warranty, so a shucked drive is effectively unwarranted from the moment it is out.
What is the 3.3V pin problem?
Some white-label drives use the third SATA power pin as a reset line, so they refuse to spin up on a standard desktop power supply. Taping over that pin or using a Molex adapter is the usual fix and it is harmless.
Can I shuck a portable 2.5-inch external?
No. Portable units have the USB controller soldered to the drive board with no SATA connector, so there is nothing recoverable inside. Only desktop 3.5-inch units are worth opening.
Will I get a CMR drive inside?
Usually at the larger capacities, and it varies by batch, which is why the contents column says what is typical rather than guaranteed. If you need certainty about the exact model, buy the bare drive.
