Is it really a deal?
Surveillance stock turns over slowly and discounts rarely, so this page often has too few new drives at a tracked low to enter the index. That is the gate working rather than a fault.
For the cheapest row on this page we have recorded a low of CA$868.00 on 2026-10-16, across 8 days of our own checks.
2026 is a shortage year for both hard-drive platters and NAND, and several list prices were raised earlier in the year before being discounted during this event. A percentage off a raised list price is not the same as a low, which is why every row here is compared against what we recorded for that exact item instead.
What the verdicts mean
- Real low
- At or below the lowest price we have recorded for this item.
- Near its low
- Within three percent of the lowest price we have recorded.
- List-price cut
- Cut against Amazon's own reference price, but still above the lowest price we have recorded.
- Not a deal
- Above our 30-day median for this item.
- No history yet
- We have fewer than seven days of our own price checks for this item.
Surveillance drives are built for a workload nothing else on this site shares: many simultaneous video streams written continuously, with reads as the rare case. SkyHawk, SkyHawk AI, WD Purple and Purple Pro use firmware tuned for that pattern, tolerating dropped frames rather than retrying a read and stalling a recorder. They are not faster than a NAS drive and they are not better value per terabyte; they fail differently, in a way a DVR can survive. For general storage a NAS drive is the better buy.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a surveillance drive different?
Firmware tuned for continuous sequential writes from many camera streams at once, which tolerates a dropped frame instead of retrying a read and stalling the recorder. The hardware is close to a NAS drive; the behaviour under load is not.
Can I use a WD Purple in a NAS?
It will work and it is the wrong tool. The firmware is tuned against the random read patterns a file server produces, so a Red Plus or IronWolf at similar money performs better in that role.
What do SkyHawk AI and Purple Pro add?
Higher stream counts and headroom for analytics workloads that read back footage while still recording. For a handful of cameras the standard models are sufficient.
Why is this page usually not indexed?
It needs three in-stock new drives at or near a low we have tracked. Surveillance pricing barely moves during retail events, so that threshold is frequently unmet and the page stays out of the index until it is.
