The PS5 needs an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD with a heatsink and a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s. SATA SSDs and older PCIe Gen3 drives are not supported, so the spec sheet matters before you buy. An M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD with a heatsink, a read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s, and capacity up to 8TB. SATA SSDs and PCIe Gen3 drives are not supported.

Does a PS5 SSD need a heatsink?

Yes. Sony requires heat dissipation. Many drives include a heatsink; otherwise fit a flat one. The drive plus heatsink must be no taller than 11.25 mm.

Should I buy a used or refurbished SSD for my PS5?
