Is it really a deal?
At this end of the range a discount rarely closes the gap to 24TB on a per-terabyte basis. The verdict tells you whether the drive is at its own low; the capacity pages below tell you whether that low is worth paying.
For the cheapest row on this page we have recorded a low of $1,103.98 on 2026-10-30, across 14 days of our own checks.
2026 is a shortage year for both hard-drive platters and NAND, and several list prices were raised earlier in the year before being discounted during this event. A percentage off a raised list price is not the same as a low, which is why every row here is compared against what we recorded for that exact item instead.
The cheapest new 28 TB listing today works out at $36.43/TB.
Renewed and recertified stock at 28 TB starts at $30.73/TB, with the seller rather than the manufacturer behind the warranty.
The cheapest external route to 28 TB is $39.43/TB, which you would have to open the enclosure to use as a bare drive.

Everything from 26TB upward, where you pay extra per terabyte for fitting more into one bay. Seagate's Exos M 28TB and 30TB and the IronWolf Pro 28TB lead the new listings, with recertified Exos 26TB units occasionally undercutting them. The case for buying here is bay count rather than value: if a chassis is full, the only way to grow is a larger drive, and the premium over 24TB is what that costs. For anyone with a spare bay, the 22TB and 24TB pages are cheaper per terabyte.
Frequently asked questions
Why does 28TB cost more per terabyte than 24TB?
Newer recording technology and higher platter counts carry a density premium, and the drives are produced in smaller volumes. You are buying bay efficiency rather than value, which only pays when the chassis is already full.
Do the largest drives cost more to run?
Not meaningfully per terabyte. Helium filling keeps idle draw close to a 20TB unit, so one 30TB drive uses less power for the same stored data than two 16TB drives would. Heat and noise in a small enclosure are the practical penalties, not electricity.
Are these drives sensible in a four-bay NAS?
Only if the bays are the constraint. Rebuild times run very long at this capacity, so dual parity is close to mandatory, and four drives of this size represent a lot of value in one chassis.
Is recertified stock available at 26TB and above?
Occasionally, mostly at 26TB, because this generation has barely begun reaching retirement. The renewed table here is short by nature and the gate reflects that honestly rather than padding it.
