Tape is the cheapest storage per terabyte by a wide margin, at a few dollars where hard drives are in the twenties, and the catch is the drive. An LTO-8 or LTO-9 mechanism costs thousands, so cartridges only make sense once that is already paid for. Capacities here are native, not the compressed figures printed on the box: 12TB for LTO-8 and 18TB for LTO-9. Multipacks are costed per cartridge so a five-pack does not appear to be a bargain purely because it is a bigger box.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a tape drive to use these cartridges?
Yes, and that is the whole economic story. An LTO-8 or LTO-9 mechanism runs into the thousands, so the cheap cost per terabyte only applies once you already own or can borrow a drive. There is no adapter that turns a cartridge into a disk.
Why is the capacity lower than the number on the box?
Boxes quote compressed capacity at a 2.5 to 1 ratio. We use native capacity, which is 12TB for LTO-8 and 18TB for LTO-9, because compression gains nothing on video or on already-compressed archives.
Can an LTO-9 drive read my LTO-8 tapes?
It can read and write the previous generation but not the one before that, so an LTO-9 drive handles LTO-8 media and stops there. Check the generation on the cartridge before buying for an existing library.
How is a multipack priced on this page?
Per cartridge. A five-pack is divided by five before it is ranked, so bulk boxes compete on the same basis as singles rather than looking cheaper because the total capacity is larger.
